В связи со стартовавшим в январе 2015 г. Годом литературы в России автор рассматривает значимость наследия мировой и отечественной литературы и отмечает роль, которую играет литература в жизни общества. Дается концентрированный ответ на вопрос, что представляет собой литература в развитии человеческой культуры. На основании общенаучного тезаурусного подхода автор стремится показать литературу как важнейший вид искусства, способный воздействовать на формирование в обществе и отдельном человеке того культурного базиса, который человек воспринимает как свою культуру. Несмотря на неоднозначную ситуацию в современной литературе, автор приходит к выводу о необходимости сохранить желание читать мировую классику, чтобы понять себя и свое предназначение в этом мире.

In connection with the Year of Literature in Russia which started in January 2015 the author shows the importance of legacy of world and Russian literature and points out the role of literature in society. The author answers the question what literature means for the development of human culture. On the basis of thesaurus approach the author tries to show literature as the most important type of art which can affect formation of the cultural basis in society and individual that is perceived as their own culture. In spite of a dubious situation in modern literature the author comes to the conclusion that it is necessary to retain the wish to read world literature in order to understand themselves and their place in the world.
