MOSCOW COMMERCIAL INSTITUTE VS. «ACADEMIC SERFDOM» (On the issue of the educational process organization at the beginning of the XX century and nowadays)

Abstract

The article highlights some aspects of the organization of educational process and teaching activities at Russian higher education institutions in the beginning of the XX century, particularly at the Moscow Commercial Institute (MCI). The system of teaching workload accounting accustomed at the time is described. The special attention is paid to the phenomenon of so-called «academic serfdom», its causes, consequences and methods to eliminate it. In addition, an information is provided regarding the average teaching workload of MCI professors in the early 1910s, followed by a number of specific examples.
